Jana's Story ~
In
April of 2005, Jana Eshaghian, co-founder of Eclipse Couture, was diagnosed
with systemic lupus erythematosus, also known as SLE lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which
causes the body to attack it’s own organ system(s), resulting in inflammation of the tissues, swelling and tissue destruction.
A “flare” of the disease can include debilitating joint pain, persistent fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, skin rashes, persistent headache, mouth sores and more.
While there is no one sure way to avoid a flare, limiting sun exposure tops the list. As a resident of sunny Southern California, this meant Jana would have to cover up everyday, even for a trip to the grocery store. Jana learned that regular clothing doesn’t do much to protect skin from the sun (a typical t-shirt only has a UPF of between 5 and 9) and she was concerned about the constant use of the chemicals found in sunscreens. Jana’s search for sun protective clothing began and what she found were uncomfortable fabrics in unflattering styles. With few alternatives, she settled for wearing sports related outfits, hiking and outdoor gear or “old lady” clothes. Jana says, “It was difficult enough to have this awful disease, but then I had to wear clothes that felt stiff and either had no shape or hugged me in all the wrong places. It was a little depressing.”
In 2008, Jana talked with well-known Danish clothing designer, Annika Olsen, about creating fashionable clothing with a good fit made from fabrics with UPF. Annika had also been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder which affects her skin. Jana and Annika realized the need to fill a niche in the market of sun protective clothing and Eclipse Couture was born. It took a long time to find the right fabric – soft, comfortable, breathable, a little stretch and UPF. The two ladies searched all over the world and finally found the perfect material made right here in the USA.
